Hull Construction Completed!

Continuing on where we have left off, in the last month we have completed the works on the hull. The second and third layers of the hull have been planked. Following that, the hull have been covered with multiple layers of fiberglass and epoxy coating before the hull is turned right-side up for its reveal. In this post I will share each stage of the construction.

Second and third layers of planking

After the sanding and fairing of the first layer of planking is completed, work commenced on the second layer of 4mm thick planking. The second layer is constructed at a (+)ve 45 degrees angle to the first layer and (-)ve 90 degrees to the third layer of planking. The planks are attached to the first layer by marine grade glue. To ensure a good bond, the planks are stapled with plastic staplers to the first layer. The third layer is attached in a similar manner with the main difference is that the staplers were attached temporarily and removed after the last layer is glued. Below photos demonstrate this stage of works.

Fiberglass laying and epoxy coating

In order to ensure the durability of the yachts and to facilitate the painting works the hull is covered by two layers of fiberglass. The fiberglass is applied on the hull by hand laying. After the epoxy is set, the fairing of the boat was made with epoxy fillers. This operation was repeated several times with different grades of fillers until a fair and smooth surface of the hull was reached. As a final step a layer of prime coating was applied on the hull. The Ventus 33 hull is now ready to be revealed!!
